Information we collect

We may collect account details such as your email address, age status or date of birth, authentication identifiers, profile state, guide relationships, invitation status, billing state, support messages, and basic device or usage information needed to keep Urnle working reliably.

When you use the native app, we also store the journal content and media you create, including text, links, photos, audio, video, guidance history, and evolving AI-generated character synopses used to preserve relevant relational context, hopes, and aspirations across guidance sessions.

How we use information

We use your information to provide personal journaling, AI Guidance, and the potential for human guide insights attached to your entries. We provide account security, billing, customer support, product debugging, abuse prevention, and service reliability.

We may use automated systems, manual review, or both to detect fraud, abuse, threats, harmful conduct, and violations of the Terms of Use; enforce product restrictions; protect Urnle, its users, and others; and comply with law.

We use an adult age confirmation and approximate birth year, or a date of birth for younger journalers, to make AI guidance age-appropriate. Urnle sends the resulting age-aware guidance context, rather than a raw date of birth, to the AI service. A date of birth is not displayed to human guides.

If you use Urnle, your journal content will be processed by an internet connected LLM in conjunction with Urnle proprietary code - to generate reflections, summaries, follow-up questions, or other guidance features. Guidance is designed to support reflection and is not a substitute for professional care.

Human guide access

Your journal is private from human guides by default. When you invite a human guide and that guide accepts the invitation, you authorize that guide to access and review the content and media in that journal, including entries that existed before acceptance and entries you create while the relationship remains active.

A guide with active access may see your journal entries, attached media, relevant journal context, and the guidance comments associated with that journal. Human guides can also see conversation you have with Gurnle (the in-app version of an internet connected LLM). You can revoke a guide's access through the product. After revocation, the guide can no longer access your journal in Urnle, although revocation does not erase content they previously viewed or records we must retain to operate the service or meet legal obligations. We cannot control whether human guides copy journal entries. You are trusted to discern whether you trust your human guides, though we do vet guides and control who can become a human guide on the platform.

Service providers

We use trusted providers for services such as hosting, authentication, storage, payments, analytics, email, messaging, and AI processing. These providers may process information only as needed to support Urnle.

Retention and deletion

We retain information for as long as needed to provide the service, maintain records, meet legal obligations, enforce our terms, prevent fraud or abuse, protect against harm, resolve disputes, and improve reliability. An account may be deactivated and its associated content permanently deleted following a Terms of Use enforcement decision. Limited security, enforcement, transaction, or legal records may be retained when reasonably necessary even after other account data is deleted.

Accessing and exporting your data

An authenticated account holder can download a structured export of their Urnle account and journal data through the account experience while the data remains available. The export remains available when ordinary product access has been suspended, but it cannot include content already deleted, provider secrets, internal security records, or data belonging to another person. Media references are included in the export; availability of the referenced files ends when those files are deleted. You may also contact us for help with an applicable data request.

During an eligible content-remediation suspension, Urnle processes the entries and Gurnle conversations that remain after a deletion to determine automatically whether the account can be reactivated. Content deleted through the remediation experience is removed from that reevaluation. We may retain a limited enforcement record as described above without retaining the deleted journal text in that record. That record may include a one-way content reference, the applicable policy category, timestamps, and the enforcement outcome. It is kept separately from the ordinary journal experience and is not used to make a judgment about the account holder as a person.

The Spirit of Urnle's Ethics

AI is becoming a wise advisor. Many people are already having journal-style conversations with AI. Urnle is the place for those types of conversations with AI. If you are already using apps like ChatGPT, Grok, or Claude for personal conversations and advice, Urnle provides a familiar and better place for that type of AI interaction. The idea of Urnle is primarily to provide a safe place for content that doesn't do well on social media. It is content that is shared frequently on social media but really shouldn't be. Content that resonates as sadness, confusion, anger, or desire... things that involve shame, and suffering... they do need to be shared, they should be, as well as all the beautiful positive things that people share on social media to great fanfare and applause... Urnle is for both, it's just that it's wise to have a sanctuary for the content that needs to be expressed without public attention. Urnle is not about calling attention to your journal at all. It isn't about sharing publicly, it's about privacy to an extent. The idea is that this content shouldn't be held in complete solitude. It is important for someone - even if it's just AI - to hear it and comment on it so that insights may be gained so that the person can think outside their own box... and the human aspect of this is also important. AI is simply not enough... and the conversations people have with AI sometimes deserve to be read and reviewed by trusted human guides. Urnle is all about gaining perspective, gaining insight, and that simply can't be done well in a traditional journal nor on social media. A journal that has a bit of an AI talking back is much better. A journal that is shared with a trusted guide is much better.
